Project SEARCH is a transition program for students 18-21 years of age who have intellectual or developmental disabilities. It is an international program started at Cincinnati Children's Hospital in 1996. Since then, it has grown to over 700 programs in the US and expanded to 11 international sites as well. This is a cooperative program between Holmen High School and the host business, Gundersen Health System as well as DVR, Department of Vocational Rehabilitation and Aptiv.
The goal of this program is to provide a fully immersive realistic job experience to develop employability skills which will help lead to competitive employment once graduated from Project SEARCH. Students, or interns as they are referred to at Project SEARCH, report to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. They are not at HHS at all.
Daily, interns participate in 90 minutes of classroom employability skills training and then go to an assigned department for 5 hours of work experience where they are provided job training and accommodations as necessary, to work toward full independence in the department using only natural supports. Interns complete 3-10 week rotations in various departments at Gundersen. There is a graduation ceremony at the completion of this 9 month program.
