At HMS we are respectful, responsible and safe.
At HMS, we are dedicated to teaching students the behavior expectations that will help them be successful in school and beyond. We do this through the PBIS system that educates students about what is expected and then celebrates their efforts. Being respectful, responsible and safe is our goal so that every student can have the very best learning environment.
PBIS coordinates many activities throughout the year including:
Annual Kick Off Week: Each year, we take the time to train students, in the specific setting on our behavior expectations. Students are able to listen, see and practice what it means to be safe, respectful and responsible in areas such as the hallway, bus and recess.
Matrices: We have a behavior matrix that shows what our behavior expectations are in common areas throughout HMS. Teachers also have matrices in their classrooms to help students understand what safe, respectful and responsible behavior looks like in the classroom.
Pride Shields: These postcard-sized acknowledgements are used by staff to recognize students who have gone above and beyond or who have shown tremendous improvement. Last year, over 1000 of these positive messages were sent to HMS students.
Shieldies: These mini Pride Shields are given to students on-the-spot to reward behaviors that meet the HMS expectations. Grade levels collect Shieldies and save them toward a goal. Past celebrations have included dress up days, karaoke and the opportunity to use electronics at lunch for a day.
Monthly lesson plans: Each month on Early Release Days, advisory is lengthened so that teachers and present a lesson on character. Topics can be flexible to meet needs that have been observed, but common themes are also used every year such as bullying, ability awareness and kindness.
All-School Activities: PBIS sponsors great activities throughout school. One of our favorites is the annual Food Drive. This year, all HMS advisories were paired with a local business to raise food and hygiene donations for three local food pantries. Thousands of items are donated each year to help community members in need.
Team Meetings: Our teachers meet weekly to discuss our efforts academically and behaviorally and how we can provide the best support for our students to become better learners and citizens. Often times after multiple interventions/strategies, students may move through our Tier 2/Tier 3 process to ensure they are most successful. These teams are composed of multiple teachers.
